Preparing Your Fireplace for the Winter
One of the best parts of winter is getting to stay warm and cozy up by a fireplace
in your home. With winter being only a couple months away, now is the perfect time to make sure your fireplace or fireplace insert
is in the best condition possible.
With wood fireplaces or inserts, you should make sure to clean out the firebox with a vacuum and clean out any grime buildup on the walls of your fireplace or in the opening into the chimney.
If you have a wood stove in your home, it’s vital that you inspect it for any cracks in the bricks and in the metal before winter comes. When checking your door gasket, make sure that the seal is secured. If your door isn't tightly secured, smoke could get into your home and lose heat.
It’s important that during the winter you make sure that you properly remove ash that has built up. This also applies to pellet stoves, you will want to remove the combustion and distribution fans then vacuum out all the residue and soot.
When you own a gas fireplace it’s nice and easy because you don’t have to worry about cleaning up any ash. However, you will want to do a full inspection and check if there are any cracks or scratches on the glass. When the glass is scratched, the high heat can cause it to shatter.
